There are two huge reasons why you must get book reviews for your just completed book.

The first one is that it is imperative for your development as a writer to receive independent opinions on your manuscript. These will highlight any strengths and weaknesses apparent in your work and allow you to adjust your writing style to eliminate the weaknesses and accommodate the strengths.

The book reviews should be objective and impartial. Giving your book to friends and relatives to read is a great way to get supportive feedback which will spur you on to complete your epic, but these cannot be regarded as an impartial book review. Only when someone unknown to you, with no ulterior agenda, gives an opinion on your work, can you be sure that it is of value.

You do not need to wait until you have finished the book. It is a good idea to get an initial feeling from a book reviewer about halfway through your book as to whether the completed work will be of commercial interest. If the comments are negative, you can fix the issues raised during another round of editing or re-write portions of the book to produce a better finished product.

Book reviews are an invaluable marketing tool and all efforts should be made to obtain as many as possible. Keep in mind that book reviewers often take 3 - 4 months to produce a book review, and factor this in to your marketing time-frame, which needs to be carefully handled. Marketing should start some 3 months before the book is published, while publishing itself can take up to a year.
