How do you move a hot tub? A professional tells you how.
Basically, we use specialized equipment designed to help us remove your spa or hot tub safely and much more efficiently then getting a dozen of your strongest friends together to help you out. To begin, we need to pick up your hot tub and tip it up on one end - it is better if you leave all the panels on - and place it tipped up on end on a special spa dolly. Some tubs are really large and heavy so professionals will often use a special tool to tip the hot tubs up automatically. Did you know an empty hot tub may weigh as much as a half ton or more?
In addition to being super heavy, hot tubs and spas are big and difficult to control when you start to move them. Having the right tools and plenty of experience is what you really need. With the tub on its side, we wheel it out through your gate and load it on to our truck where it is strapped securely in place to be moved to a new location or hauled away.
We now need to get it out of the yard. Is there an easy path through your yard to roll the hot tub out to the trailer? Of course you know about things like trees and roofs and covered patios, right? Yep, we need to be able to get under those and through your backyard gate. I would suggest you measure the overhead clearance and gate opening.
There are some other things to watch for that might make moving your spa a problem. Are there things like a hose faucet or main water supply to your house in the way? What about the width of your gate? Don't forget to take away about 3 inches if there is a gat latch pin sticking out. What about tree branches or roof eves? Do we have to roll the spa under a patio? Are there any other obstructions in our path? (As far as overhead clearance, you need to add at least 10 inches or so to the height of your tub on its side. The cart wheels make the tub taller so if your spa is 7 feet x 7 feet, you will need to measure for about an 8 foot overhead clearance.) Once in a while, even though you might think we can't get your tub out, we are still able to move a tub around these obstructions and get it out safely. Other times, it is necessary to lift it out with a crane.
Using a crane service always adds to the cost of a move, so professional hot tub and spa movers will always do their best to move your tub without a crane. If a crane is needed, it will need to be scheduled in advance of your move by your hot tub mover. For that reason, you should inspect the pathway out of your yard carefully to avoid an unnecessary rescheduling and added expense. Once you tub has been moved and connected at the new location by a certified electrician, you are ready to fill the tub and start enjoying it again.
