Unlike men, women have more leeway in choosing evening clothes. This freedom is right down the alley of women who are naturally more vain and conscious of their appearances. There are few rules as to what is appropriate, so each woman can choose whatever suits her own style and personality. This is more apparent in events attended by celebrities. Women in all kinds of shapes and sizes appear in a dazzling array of clothes, some very classy and sophisticated, others simply outrageous.

This can be a great alternative in cold weather, although a long dress in a winter fabric worn with a coordinating shawl or a fur wrap can result in the same level of comfort. Celebrities are on a class of their own because they wear only designer clothes.

As celebrities walk down the red carpet, attention is inevitably focused on their clothes, and among the first questions asked is the name of the designer. Designer evening wear has become a requirement for these posh events, so much so that many designers loan custom made gowns to top stars at no charge.

So you will see that entertainment awards nights are a virtual who's who in the fashion business - Calvin Klein, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and Versace. Men however are not too far behind as they also come dressed to the nines. Like their women counterparts, famous actors will be queried on who are the makers of their evening suits. So far, the most popular and acknowledged as the top dog in men's fashion is Armani.

Knockoffs of the most attractive gowns seen on televised award shows are usually available in stores within a few weeks after the show to which they were first worn. The clothes are available and within reach for ordinary people, which is either bad or good depending on one's point of view. While a designer gown might cost $5,000, the department store copy will go for about $200. The downside is that a dress that will look fabulous in a perfectly sculpted actress may look outrageous if worn by an ordinary-bodied woman.
